The famous Watego's to Lighthouse walk

Byron Bay is renowned for its stunning coastline, and in my opinion, it boasts some of the best beaches in the world. Each beach offers its own unique charm, from hidden coves to vibrant surf spots, and many are perfect for snorkeling. Here’s a rundown of my top five favorite beaches in this breathtaking region.

5. Whites Beach

Tucked away in the Broken Head National Park, Whites Beach feels like a hidden gem. As you descend the cliffside, you’re greeted by an untouched slice of paradise. The serene atmosphere and pristine sands make it the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s a place where time seems to stand still, allowing you to soak in the natural beauty around you.

4. Tallow Beach

Tallow Beach is a local favorite for good reason. Nestled away from the north winds, this beautiful stretch of sand is perfect for sunbathing or catching waves. The beach is known for its fantastic left-hand surf breaks and offers plenty of space for you to find your own spot of tranquility. As you stroll along the shoreline towards Broken Head, you’ll likely feel a sense of peace wash over you, making it an ideal retreat.

3. Belongil Beach

Belongil Beach is a fantastic destination for those looking to enjoy a leisurely day out, especially if you’re bringing your furry friend along. With its picturesque sunset views toward the hinterland and stunning sunrises facing the iconic Lighthouse, Belongil is a feast for the eyes. Whether you’re catching a wave or taking a serene stroll, this beach offers a relaxed atmosphere that’s hard to resist.

2. Watego's Beach

Watego's Beach is not just a spot to relax; it’s an adventure waiting to unfold. Located at the most easterly point of Australia, this beach is perfect for surfing, swimming, or simply exploring the stunning landscape and go for that Lighthouse walk. Keep an eye out for the resident Bottlenose dolphins, who often play in the waves, and don’t miss the opportunity to witness the majestic migration of Humpback whales from May to October. It’s a true highlight of the Byron Bay experience!

1. The Pass

Topping my list is The Pass, my absolute favorite spot in Byron Bay for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing. This beach is incredibly family-friendly, with safe rock pools for kids to explore and ample space for surfing lessons.

The snorkelling here is unparalleled on the east coast of NSW, thanks to the diverse marine life just a short swim from the shore. The reef is easily accessible, ranging in depth from 1 to 3 meters, making it a fantastic spot for beginners and experienced snorkelers alike.
